Mendetz

Mendetz is a band from Barcelona, Spain, active since 2003. They play a mix of guitars, Casios and other older keyboards, and their performances and recordings avoid programmed or prerecorded parts. Their sound combines frenetic drums, highly rhythmic guitars and heavy bass, and they describe their approach as keeping a human touch in electronic music.

Style and material

The group works with a repertoire of about 12 songs, including a version of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby”. Their tracks are recorded in the home studio of one of the members. Their music is associated with casio-punk, electronic, dance rock, indie rock and alternative, and their sound and themes are often compared with Duran Duran.

Lyrics and themes

Their lyrics deal with future sex, the rehabilitation of forgotten 1980s actors, ironic references to Chimo Bayo and the cultural world around him, and ideas about identity, fashion and false communication. They also present an interest in old robots and “honest” Casios as a way of preserving feeling and humanity.

Live work and recognition

Mendetz have played live several times in Barcelona, including at Sala Mono, the KGB, Sala Spay9 and La Báscula. In 2005, they are named best demo by Mondosonoro magazine.
