Men I Trust

Men I Trust is a band from Montréal, Canada, active since 2014. The group consists of Jessy Caron, Dragos Chiriac, Odile Marmet-Rochefort and Emmanuelle Proulx. Its music sits within bedroom pop, downtempo, dream pop, indie pop, neo-psychedelia and pop, and is also associated with indie and sophisti-pop.

Formation and early development

Dragos Chiriac and Jessy Caron know each other from their fourth year of high school. In the mid-2000s, Dragos has a background in classical piano, while Jessy plays metal guitar. In 2012, while Dragos is finishing a master’s degree in audio postproduction at Laval University, he spends much of his time at the LARC studio working on solo projects. He later meets Jessy again in a faculty hallway, and they talk about making a French touch and Italo disco track together. A few weeks later they record it, and the collaboration expands into a wider project.

Over time, the project involves several singers, including Odile Marmet-Rochefort, Gabrielle Shonk, Helena Deland and Geoffroy Sauvé. The group records, mixes, masters and makes its own music videos.

Line-up and live work

Emma Proulx joins after a mutual friend introduces her to Dragos through an internet video in 2015. The pair records “Out in Myself”, and Emma later joins live performances with Odile. Her voice becomes part of the group’s sound, and she remains in Men I Trust. With the second album Headroom, the act becomes a trio. The band name in this period includes Dragos, Emma, Jessy, Mathieu and Alexis.

Men I Trust is described as making smooth, calm music with simple rhythms and soft melodies.
