Melinda Ortner

Melinda Ortner is a California-based singer-songwriter and recording artist. Her music draws on easy listening, piano-led pop and influences that she names as ranging from Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington to Fiona Apple, Muse, Radiohead and classical music. She also says her father, a music teacher, first pushed her toward piano, and that she later discovered singing through choir work.

Early musical development

Ortner begins music through piano lessons at her father’s insistence, although she initially resists the instrument. After taking part in acting ambitions and then joining a choir, she discovers that she can sing and starts developing that side of her work. She describes her writing as shaped by classical music as well as by piano parts mixed with electronica.

Recording and live work

By 2009, Ortner is recording her first full-length album and is being shopped for a record deal. She performs in Los Angeles venues including Hotel Café and The Whisky a Go Go, and builds a following there.

Recognition and performances

Ortner is voted Best of 2007 and Best of 2008 by KLAS FM Radio in Los Angeles. She is a semi-finalist for the Independent Music World Series Contest and also appears as a semi-finalist for the IMWSC. At West Coast Songwriters showcases, she wins Best Song and Best Performance four times, and she places second with “Sorry Tonight” at the West Coast Songwriters annual play-offs.

She is also featured on MTV’s True Life, and one of her songs is placed in a film documentary with a European release.
