Meghan Trainor

Meghan Trainor is an American singer and songwriter from Nantucket, Massachusetts. She is identified with blue-eyed soul, bubblegum pop, dance-pop, doo-wop, pop and R&B, and is also associated with television work. Her label affiliation includes I Love Tommy Bruce Publishing.

Early work and songwriting

Trainor wins the worldwide Sonicbids 2011 Tennessee Concerts Song Contest at the age of 17 with her song “You’re Good With Me.” She also attends the Durango Songwriter’s Expo, where Big Al Anderson of NRBQ introduces her to Carla Wallace of Big Yellow Dog Music. Shortly after her 18th birthday, while still in high school, she signs as a songwriter with Big Yellow Dog Music. She settles in Nashville full-time at 19.

In 2011, she writes and self-releases two albums, I’ll Sing With You and Only 17. She takes several writing trips to Los Angeles, New York City and Nashville, and earns songwriting cuts with artists including Rascal Flatts, Sabrina Carpenter and R5.

Breakthrough

On one of her writing trips, Trainor meets and writes with producer Kevin Kadish. Together they write “All About That Bass” in 2014. Her publishing company thinks other artists may record it, but L.A. Reid hears Trainor’s demo and signs her to Epic Records, allowing her to release it herself. The song becomes her first number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and also tops charts in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Denmark and the United Kingdom. In the UK, it becomes the first act to enter the Official Singles Chart Top 40 based on streams alone, and it remains at number one for four weeks, making it the longest-running UK number one by a female act in 2014.

Releases and awards

Trainor’s debut EP, Title, is released in 2014 and reaches number 15 on the US Billboard 200 and number 17 in Canada. “Dear Future Husband” is later cancelled as a single, but reaches number 9 in New Zealand. “Lips Are Movin” is released as the lead single from her third studio album Title and is sent to contemporary hit radio in 2014.

She receives a nomination for New Artist of the Year at the 2014 American Music Awards and two nominations at the 57th Grammy Awards: Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Her fans are known as “Megatrons.”
