Media Puzzle

Media Puzzle is an Australian post-punk and egg punk act from Lismore, where it is described as a mysterious figure in the local nightlife. The project takes its name from the Irish horse that won the 2002 Melbourne Cup.

Recordings and style

Media Puzzle releases scuzzy post-punk material with a strong egg-punk influence. Over a three-year period, the act puts out three albums and two short EPs. Its sound is described as sitting between Suicide’s dark melodies and Uranium Club’s eccentric approach, while also moving between drum machine-driven egg punk and fuzzy scuzz-pop.

The act’s releases attract attention from Rough Trade, which features the last two on exclusive vinyl, and from Pitchfork, which gives one of them a 7.6 rating and notes its unusual creativity. A later album, New Racehorse, marks a shift away from the earlier drum machine-led style and moves towards a more collaborative mix of oddball pop and garage punk.

Activity and influences

Media Puzzle continues after a year of DIY recording and touring. The project is associated with fans of early Beck, Uranium Club, DEVO, and related punk and pop offshoots.
