mc majestic is the performance name of Kevin Christie, an MC from North London. He begins performing in nightclubs at the age of fifteen and breaks onto pirate radio stations playing UK garage and early grime in 2002. At that time he steps back from a normal teenage social life to focus on building his name among UK garage producers and MCs.
Early club bookings follow at venues including Scala in Kings Cross and Eros in Enfield. He also faces the particular challenge of establishing himself as a white MC on the UK garage circuit.
Mixtapes and electronic crossover
In 2007, Majestic starts posting mixtapes on online forums, including the Uptown forum. On these recordings he raps over electro house beats, having recently moved towards that sound as an alternative to the UK garage scene. The posts attract interest from international promoters in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Russia, and he performs for crowds of up to five thousand alongside DJs including Laidback Luke, Bart B Moore, Will Bailey and The Wideboys.
Work with The Wideboys
A meeting with The Wideboys in Amsterdam leads to a shared musical direction, combining their production style with Majestic’s lyrical flow and social commentary. In early 2009, he and The Wideboys finish In The VIP, a track that satirises VIP culture on the London club scene. Other songs including Stand Together and Running Up That Hill continue that mix of social messaging and pop-oriented production.
