Matthew Shlomowitz is a composer of concert music and performance pieces. Born in 1975 and raised in Adelaide, Australia, he lives in London.

He is a Lecturer in Composition at the University of Southampton and co-directs the new music ensemble Plus-Minus with Joanna Bailie. He writes for a range of ensembles and performers, including asamisimasa, bESIdES, Calefax, Ensemble Offspring, EXAUDI, Ives Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble, Quatuor Diotima, Ricciotti Ensemble, Speak Percussion and Wespoke New Music Company, and he also creates extended works for Mark Knoop and Stephane Ginsburgh.

Work and projects

Shlomowitz has two continuing project strands. Popular Contexts is a series of pieces that examines everyday and popular culture, often bringing field recordings together with instrumental music. Letter Pieces combines physical actions, music and text.

The Letter Piece Company

He forms the Letter Piece Company with dancer Shila Anaraki. Together they create A to Zzz, a one-hour theatre work for five performers, which premieres at Vooruit in Ghent in February 2012.
