Matthew North is a guitarist, songwriter and band founder associated with the UK gothic and alternative music scene. Born in 1972, he is best known as the lead guitarist and founder member of Secrets For September, and he is also formerly of All Living Fear and Corrosion.

Career

North is closely identified with All Living Fear, which he plays with for much of its long run in the UK gothic scene. He later forms Secrets For September, a project described as moving towards folk rock and progressive sounds. He is also currently playing guitar for Mike Westbrook’s project Westbrook and Company, under the title A Bigger Show.

Style and influences

His musical influences include Frank Zappa, The Cure, Fairport Convention, All About Eve, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Arthur Brown. He has a professional involvement with Arthur Brown from 1999. The range of those influences reflects work across folk, blues, free jazz, acoustic and goth-related settings.

Recording work

North releases two albums of improvised music live under the name Matthew North’s Department Factory. He also releases a first full solo album as a singer-songwriter, still THINKING? still DREAMING.
