Matthew Herbert

Matthew Herbert is a musician and producer from Kent, United Kingdom, working mainly in electronic music. Born in 1972, he is also associated with deep house, electroacoustic music, IDM, microhouse, minimal and electronica.

Career

Herbert begins recording in 1996 and releases music on a range of labels under several aliases, including Doctor Rockit, Wishmountain, Radio Boy, Mr. Vertigo and Transformer, as well as under his own name. He also records with the Matthew Herbert Big Band. His work is marked by an experimental approach that pushes at the usual boundaries of electronic music.

He releases more than ten albums of music that he writes, produces and performs himself. Alongside this solo output, he contributes production to albums by Björk and Roisin Murphy, and remixes artists including Moloko, R.E.M., Perry Farrell, Serge Gainsbourg, Yoko Ono, John Cale, The Avalanches and Cornelius.

Labels and projects

Herbert owns and runs Accidental Records, and his releases also appear on Phonography. Other associated names include DJ Boom, Fog City and DJs Collapse.

Performances

He performs at venues and festivals including the Montreux Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, Paris’ Pompidou Centre, Tokyo’s Blue Note, Sónar and Glastonbury. He also supports Björk at the Hollywood Bowl.
