Matt Tolfrey is a house DJ and producer from the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom, who is born in 1980 and dies in 2025. He grows up in the Middle East before returning to the UK, where his career begins in Nottingham.
DJ work and residencies
His early Nottingham work includes residencies at the Bomb and later at Stealth, where he continues to hold a residency. These leads to regular bookings at Fabric and to appearances in the USA and Germany. He also plays globally, with notable dates including Sunday School for Degenerates in Miami, Mulletover in Ibiza and Watergate in Berlin.
Leftroom and related labels
In 2005, Tolfrey starts Leftroom, a label that becomes closely associated with his role as a DJ, producer and manager. Its first release is The Extended Family EP, and the label develops a roster that includes MarcAshken, Inxec, Ed Davenport and Glimpse. He later sets up two sub-labels: Leftroom Limited, which focuses on peak-time records, and Leftout, which provides a home for lesser-known artists. He also runs the Is This label.
Productions, remixes and collaborations
Tolfrey’s own productions begin appearing on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, and his releases and remixes also appear on Four:Twenty, Renaissance and Ransom Note. His discography includes The Horn and Acix on Crosstown Rebels, Are We Family on Leftroom Records, Popeye on Leftroom Limited, and Enter The Mad Hat and Shakil on Leftroom Limited. His remix work includes tracks by MarcAshken, Roman Flugel, Fergie, TCP, Sasha, TG, Rui Da Silva, Frankie, Adultnapper and Popof. He collaborates with MarcAshken, Glimpse, Craig Sylvester, Inxec and B-Pole, and he works with MarcAshken as TASH.
Style and label work
His sound draws on deep house and techno, as well as stripped-back bleeps and a German-influenced edge, and it is described as a hybrid form of electronic funk. Beyond DJing and production, he is active as an A&R figure, and one example of that role is his involvement in securing Ito & Star’s Suduko Kid.
Mix CD
He also releases the mix CD Don’t Be Leftout, mixed by Matt Tolfrey, on Leftroom in 2007.
