Matt Johnson (Jamiroquai) starts playing piano at the age of five at his family home. His musical influences include Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Squarepusher.

Before joining Jamiroquai, he works as a writer and performer in the bands Sunray and Nu Hope. While in Sunray, Kim Mazelle records a cover of “Perhaps”. He also writes and produces for other artists, including Alexia, whose single “Ring” becomes a minor hit.

He enters Jamiroquai through an audition in 2001. Simon Katz, a former guitarist in the group, recommends him, and Derrick makes the call to bring him in. The audition succeeds, and he becomes a regular part of the band.
