Matt Corby

Matt Corby is an Australian singer-songwriter from Sydney, Australia. His work spans blues, folk, indie rock, psychedelic soul and soul, alongside an acoustic singer-songwriter style.

Career

Corby begins performing professionally as a teenager and appears on a reality television talent show in 2007. In 2009 he independently releases his debut EP, Song For..., before moving to London and signing to Communion, the UK independent label run by Ben Lovett of Mumford and Sons.

He works with producer Ian Grimble, who also records with artists including The Libertines and Seasick Steve, on the EP Transition To Colour, which appears in late 2010. Corby spends part of 2011 playing sold-out London shows, performing at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and returning to Australia for a run of intimate “Secret Garden” backyard shows. He also supports Elbow on their national tour and on sold-out Splendour sideshows in July.

Albums and notable songs

Corby releases Monday in 2015 as the first song from his debut album Telluric. The track is later voted number 53 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2015. Telluric follows in 2016. His second studio album, Rainbow Valley, is released in 2018.

Style and recognition

His vocals and songwriting draw comparisons with Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley. He is known for performances that hold large audiences in silence, and for songs built around falsetto, folk-influenced rhythm and layered harmonies.

Corby is also known to enjoy surfing and reading, and he becomes a father in 2018. His labels include Rocky Lane Music LLP and Island Records Australia.
