Martyrium

Martyrium is a melodic black metal group from Luqa, Malta, active since 1999. The name is shared by several different acts, including German black metal and atmospheric black metal bands, as well as a gothic rock group from Portugal, but the Maltese melodic black metal band is the one identified here.

Style and identity

The band is associated with black metal, melodic black metal and atmospheric black metal. Its Maltese origin places it within a scene better known in its own country than in the wider international black metal landscape.

Other acts with the same name

There is also a German black metal Martyrium from Osnabrück, formed in 1990 and split up in 1995, which records the album L.V.X. Occulta in 1994. That version has included Daevas on vocals and bass, Aharon on guitar, and Neophyte on drums. Another Martyrium is a German atmospheric black metal band from Bremen, formed in autumn 1996 by Brân and Mythos, which later records material including Martyrium and When Nothingness Entwines the Being. A fourth act is a Portuguese gothic rock band that releases Sallow Sight in 1997.
