Mark Rae is a UK electronic and hip hop producer and DJ from Ashington, London. He first comes to wider attention through his collaboration with Steve Christian as Rae & Christian, a project associated with Grand Central Records and listed here as a two-member act. Rae also establishes Grand Central Records and Manchester record shop Fat City, helping to shape part of the UK’s independent dance music scene.
Production and remixes
Rae builds a large catalogue as a remixer, with more than 100 remixes credited to him. His work includes versions for Bob Marley, Jay-Z and Dinah Washington, as well as the theme music for Six Feet Under. His production work links him to hip hop, breakbeat, downtempo, lounge and downbeat styles.
Rae & Christian
With Rae & Christian, Rae releases two albums, including Northern Sulphuric Soul, which appears in a Top 50 British Dance Albums of All Time list. The project is the collaboration that helps establish his name in Europe’s music scene.
YESKING
Rae later works under the YESKING name with Rhys Adams. The project is conceived in Jamaica but retains UK influences. Its album brings together guest vocalists including Ayak, Dawn Penn, Veba, Tor, Mystro, Kenny Knots, Sweetie Irie, Baby Chann, Prezident Brown and Pete Simpson. The music combines hip hop, dancehall, reggae and ska with live instrumentation and hip hop and R&B beats.
Solo releases
As a solo artist, Rae releases Rae Road and Into the Depths. He also has a third solo album in progress.
