Mark Lockheart is a British jazz tenor saxophonist from Lymington, England. He comes to prominence in the 1980s as a member of the Loose Tubes big band, and he works in contemporary jazz and jazz as a performer, composer and educator.

Career

After his work with Loose Tubes, Lockheart plays with Django Bates and performs in Perfect Houseplants, alongside Dudley Phillips and Martin France. He also appears in the British jazz quintet Polar Bear. His wider credits include membership of Vibraphonic, Malija and Jasper Høiby’s Fellow Creatures.

Lockheart’s own Scratch Band receives a grant from the Arts Council of England for a tour in 2001 and records the album Imaginary Dances. His compositions are also recorded with the NDR Big Band. In addition to his jazz work, he takes part in sessions with Radiohead, Prefab Sprout and Stereolab, among others.

Teaching and other roles

Lockheart teaches at Trinity College of Music in London and at Middlesex University, and he also works as a tutor for the National Youth Jazz Collective.
