Marina & The Diamonds

Marina & The Diamonds is the stage name used by Greek-Welsh singer Marina Lambrini Diamandis, who is later known professionally as MARINA. The name refers to a translation of her family name, Diamandis, with “the Diamonds” derived from that meaning. She is born in 1985 and is from Brynmawr, Wales, though she is also described as born in Abergavenny, Wales. From 2018, she uses the name MARINA professionally.

Recording history

Diamandis begins making and producing her own music in 2005. She releases her debut EP, Mermaid vs. Sailor, in 2007. Her first single is a double A-side, Obsessions/Mowgli's Road, issued through Neon Gold Records in February 2009, and this is followed by The Crown Jewels EP in June 2009. Her first single for 679 Recordings is “Mowgli's Road”, released in November 2009. Her debut studio album, The Family Jewels, follows in 2010, along with the American EP The American Jewels.

Recognition and style

In January 2010, she reaches number two in the BBC Sound of 2010 poll. Her music ranges from keyboard-led ballads to more upbeat songs with new wave influences and full band backing. Her stated influences include Daniel Johnston, Blondie, Patti Smith, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Elliott Smith, Dolly Parton, Britney Spears and Madonna.
