Mariah the Scientist

Mariah the Scientist is the professional name of Mariah Buckles, an American singer-songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. She is associated with contemporary R&B and R&B, and is signed to One Umbrella.

Early life and education

Mariah Buckles is born in Atlanta in 1997. She discovers singing when she joins her elementary school chorus. She graduates high school a year early, then moves to New York City for college. While studying at St. John’s University on a biology scholarship, she starts writing songs, before later dropping out to focus on music.

Career

She releases her debut EP, the six-track To Die For, on SoundCloud in January 2018. Canadian rapper Tory Lanez discovers her and signs her to his label, One Umbrella Records. She later tours with him, and he acts as a mentor while she develops her sound.

In February 2019, she signs to RCA Records in conjunction with One Umbrella. Her debut studio album, Master, follows later that year. The ten-track album is executive produced by Tory Lanez.

Selected songs and recognition

The debut single, “Beetlejuice,” appears in NPR’s Heat Check weekly roundup in August 2019. The video for “Reminders” premieres on Complex in August 2019. In 2020, her touring schedule includes bookings at Coachella, Primavera Sound and Pitchfork Music Festival. She also releases the single “RIP” in May 2020.
