Marewrew

Marewrew (マレウレウ) is a group from Japan whose name means “butterfly” in the Ainu language. It is made up of female artists who work to preserve and renew upopo songs, a traditional Ainu form of singing from northern Japan.

The group begins full-scale activity in 2010 after releasing its first mini-album, MAREWREW. It attracts attention through performances at the international world music festival Womad in the UK and at other venues in Europe.

Marewrew’s performances use modern arrangements of upopo songs, and this approach receives strong praise.
