Marconi Union

Marconi Union are a British electronic group from the United Kingdom, active since 2002. The group consists of Jamie Crossley, Duncan Meadows and Richard Talbot. They are associated with MU Transmissions and work across ambient, ambient techno, downtempo, electronic, minimal techno and post-rock.

Style and background

Marconi Union form in Manchester-linked artistic circles and have strong connections to the DOTCA arts collective. Their music brings together elements of electronica, ambient, jazz and dub, and they often work with a concept-based approach. Their sound draws comparison with Talk Talk, Sigur Rós and Boards of Canada.

Recording history

Their first album, Under Wires and Searchlights, appears on the independent label Ochre Records and is noted for its use of synthesisers, guitars, strings and broad soundscapes. After that release, the group goes through a period of relative silence apart from a small number of remixes.

They return in 2005 with Distance on All Saints Records, a label associated with Brian Eno. That album presents a darker and more electronic direction and attracts increased attention.

Marconi Union generally keep a low profile, rarely giving interviews or performing live, and their releases do not usually list personnel details. Over time they make much of their back catalogue, along with new and previously unreleased material, available through their own website.

Live appearances and later releases

The group appears at the 2006 Big Chill Festival and the Eden Sessions at the Eden Project in Cornwall, sharing bills with mainstream acts including Snow Patrol and Goldfrapp. They give their first interview in October 2006 on the American radio programme Echoes, and their music continues to receive radio play in the US. Their tracks also feature on several compilation albums.

They later enter a productive recording phase, completing A Lost Connection and material for two further untitled albums. Their discography includes Tokyo (2009), Glassworks (2010), Beautifully Falling Apart (Ambient Transmission Vol 1) (2011), Different Colours (2012), Weightless (Ambient Transmissions Volume 2), Anomic Jah Wobble & Marconi Union (2013), Ghost Stations (2016), Tokyo+ (2017), Dead Air (2019), Departures (2020) and Signals (2021). Reissues and remastered editions of earlier recordings also appear across several labels, including Just Music, Bine Music and MU-Transmissions.
