Marcellus Pittman

Marcellus Malik Pittman is a Detroit house and deep house DJ and producer from Detroit, United States. He begins DJing at college parties, wedding receptions and old school parties in the early 1990s, and his early listening includes Detroit radio figures known as “the Wizzard” and the “Electrifying Mojo”, along with the jazz work of Rosetta Hines.

Production and releases

His first production work appears in 1993 with the local hip-hop collective Home Grown. He then releases Essential Selections, Vol. 1 on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature label. Pittman later heads his own label, Unirhythm, and also releases music on Genre Free Publishing.

3 Chairs and Detroit connections

In 1998, Pittman forms a working relationship with Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish and Kenny Dixon, known together as 3 Chairs. As producers and selectors, they help define a key part of the Detroit sound. Pittman’s work is closely associated with Detroit and the surrounding area, while also reaching audiences in Canada, the UK, Germany, Japan and Paris.

Residency and style

He has a residency at Northern Lights in Detroit, which ends as he focuses more on production. His music sits within the Detroit house tradition and the wider deep house and electronic fields.
