Marcella Detroit is a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter from Detroit, United States. Born Marcella Levy in 1952, she is best known for her work with Shakespears Sister, the duo she forms with Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama.

Career

Detroit begins her career in 1972 playing in Bob Seger’s band. She then moves on to Eric Clapton’s band and writes “Lay Down Sally” for Clapton. Her soprano voice provides the lead vocal on Shakespears Sister’s biggest hit, “Stay”, which reaches No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart and remains there for eight weeks in 1992.

Solo work and other projects

Alongside Shakespears Sister, she releases four solo pop albums. She also appears in Absolutely Fabulous and contributes her voice to recordings by Alice Cooper, Aretha Franklin and The Simpsons. Later, she releases the blues album The Upside of Being Down as the Marcy Levy Band.
