Maple Leaves

Maple Leaves is an indie folk pop band formed in late 2008. The group consists of Anna Miles, who sings and plays piano, flute and guitar; Julian Corrie, who sings and plays guitar and piano; and Graeme Thomson on drums. Miles and Corrie meet at an open mic and form the band after finding they share an interest in story songs and melodic songwriting. Thomson joins later, starting his role on drums in February 2009.

Background and style

The band comes from Newcastle upon Tyne and Kirkintilloch, with the group also describing itself as being from “everywhere really”. Despite the name, it is not Canadian. It is associated with folk, indie pop and indie-pop, and its songs are built around storytelling and strong melodies.

Other work and activity

Anna Miles also sings on Belle and Sebastian’s God Help the Girl project, alongside Catherine Ireton and Stuart Murdoch. Julian Corrie also records electronic music under the name Miaoux Miaoux. Maple Leaves support Dan Smith on a UK tour and perform at Glasgow’s new writing night, Discombobulate, at the CCA. The band is also working on an EP.
