Mandy, Indiana
Mandy, Indiana is a Manchester-based English-French noise rock group active since 2016. The group’s current members are Simon Catling, Valentine Caulfield, Scott Fair and Alex Macdougall. It also begins as an experimental project centred on Scott Fair and Valentine Caulfield, with Liam Stewart previously part of the line-up and having toured with Lonelady.
Sound and style
The group works across post-punk, noise rock, industrial, techno and related electronic forms, with a sound that also draws on EBM, electro-industrial and industrial music. Its recordings are described as intentionally raw, with Fair’s production playing a major role in the group’s abrasive character. Caulfield sings in French, which adds a performance-art and poetic quality to the music and reinforces the band’s cross-cultural identity.
Their work mixes the tension of post-punk with rave-influenced rhythm and the harsher textures of noise and industrial music. The group has been compared with live acts such as Giant Swan and Minimal Violence, and with the guitar approach of Girl Band and Housewives.
Influences and references
The group cites filmmakers and writers including Gaspar Noé, Leos Carax and Irvine Welsh as inspirations. These references align with the band’s interest in macabre and unsettling themes, which shape both its sound and presentation.
Recordings and production
Mandy, Indiana’s debut EP includes Nike of Samothrace, Alien 3 and Bottle Episode. Daniel Avery appears on a remix of Alien 3, adding portentous drone textures. Bottle Episode reduces the group’s sound to a more stripped-back form while keeping its urgency.
The recordings are made in a range of spaces, including rehearsal rooms, home studios, industrial mills, halls and other buildings. Environmental sounds such as footsteps, chatter, a muffled piano, a dripping toilet, a buzzing fluorescent light and a passing train are used in the tracks, giving the EP a pronounced sense of place and atmosphere.
