Mamma Freedom

Mamma Freedom is a UK group active since 2003. Their music combines heavy, moody, beat-led funk rock with hip hop, soul, raunchy blues and rock, and is also described as drawing on 1970s funk in the style of Sly and the Family Stone, as well as Zeppelin- and Black Crowes-style drive. The sound also includes soaring cinematic strings and layered harmonies, arranged through producer Alexander Johnston’s production style and wall-of-sound approach.

Style and line-up

The group is presented as a seven-piece orchestra with a live show built around contrast, moving from aggressive energy to warmer, more uplifting passages. Singer and brother J fronts the band with a gravelly, velvet-toned voice that is described as moving across a wide emotional range. The band also uses powerful harmonies as part of its arrangement.

Activity and reputation

Based in the United Kingdom, Mamma Freedom builds a reputation as a hard-working live act, with sold-out venues and capacity audiences mentioned in their profile. The group signs to In Touch Records and is managed by Charles Carlini of the Carlini Group in New York. It also establishes a base in New York and has meetings in Hollywood about possible film score work. The band is said to have fans among Hollywood actors and film producers and to have influenced peers.

The group receives praise from a range of press, radio and industry figures, including comments from the London Evening Standard, BBC Radio, Manchester publications, City Life, XFM, PRS-MCPS and others.
