Malory
Malory are a German shoegaze and dream pop group from Dresden, formed in 1995 by three former school friends. They are part of the shoegaze tradition and work within an indie and wave-influenced sound, using guitars and effects rather than synthesizers to build dense, layered arrangements.
Early recordings and debut album
The band records its debut album, Not Here, Not Now, in 1999. The record is associated with a wall-of-sound approach built from layered guitar textures, shifting between male and female voices, and a mix of melancholy and atmosphere. In 2006, Clairecords reissues the album with two bonus tracks and different artwork.
Subsequent albums
Malory's second album, Outerbeats, arrives in 2001 and is described as characteristic of the group's style. By this point, the band develops its own sound rather than remaining closely tied to its influences. Their third album, The Third Face, follows in 2005 and expands into more spherical and experimental soundscapes, with angelic vocals and guitars used as sound tools.
Later activity
After the release of Pearl Diver, the band stops making releases for a period, though the group remains active. Their music is identified with dream pop and shoegaze, and the line-up includes Sven Ziesche, Jördis Marschner, Jörg Jäkle, Daniela Neuhäuser, Daniel Hammer and Jörg Köhler.
