Malka

Malka is a shoegaze band from New York. The name is also used by Tamara Schlesinger, formerly of 6 Day Riot, and by Malka Julieta, an artist from the ABC Paulista region of Brazil with more than 20 years of experience as a DJ, producer, pianist, singer and songwriter.

Background

Malka Julieta begins her career in punk bands such as Granada Rei and later establishes herself through the electronic duo We Say Go. She develops a solo career that spans popular and classical music, and becomes the first trans person to perform at Sala São Paulo.

Collaborations and style

Her work includes collaborations with Céu, Jup do Bairro, Marina Lima and Badsista. Her sound brings together pop, hip hop, funk and MPB, alongside material that connects with the queer and female music scene in Brazil.

Recordings and live appearances

She is set to release her first album, Chão, through Atabaque, with support from Natura Musical. The record includes collaborations with Deize Tigrona, Brisa Flow, Ashira, Luísa Nascim and others. She also appears at major events including Primavera Sound and The Town.
