Malachai

Malachai is a Bristol-based electronic duo formed by Gary Ealey and Scott Hendy. The group also appears under the earlier name Malakai. It has been active since 2006.

Sound and style

The duo’s music combines beats and samples with a broad range of influences, from dub to 1960s pop. Gee’s vocals are a defining part of the group’s sound, and Scott Hendy is also known as Boca 45.

Releases and collaborators

Malachai is discovered by Geoff Barrow of Portishead, who releases the group’s limited-edition 12-inch Fading World on his Invada label. The track is then used to accompany the I Count: Stop Climate Chaos video, which first airs at the 2007 Glastonbury Festival. The release is followed by the major-label debut EP 1 on Island Records, with the lead track The Battle attracting attention from Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe.
