Mahala Rai Banda

Mahala Rai Banda is a Romanian gypsy band from București. The group is shaped in the mahala, or gypsy ghettos, around Bucharest, and its name is commonly glossed as meaning “noble band from the ghetto”. Its members come from the Romanian villages of Zece Prajini and Clejani, together with retired soldiers from Moldavia.

Sound and line-up

The group combines Romanian violins and accordions with a brass section made up of army brass band veterans, alongside a rhythm section. It works in brass-band and folk styles, with a wider Balkan and world music context suggested by its instrumentation and repertoire.

Reworkings and notable appearances

Tracks by Mahala Rai Banda are reworked and recreated for the Electric Gypsyland 2 project by Nouvelle Vague, Balkan Beat Box, Dj ClicK, Forty Thieves Orkestar and Russ Jones, alongside pieces by label mates Taraf de Haidouks and Kocani Orkestar. The track “Mahalageasca” appears in the film Borat and on the Buddha Bar Ten Years compilation.

The band is described as combining inventive arrangements with a strong live presence, and its concerts are known for turning into lively parties.
