Madi is the performing name of Mary Carmen. The project begins with Madi Hermens as a singer-songwriter, performing self-written songs on solo piano. After winning Kunstbende Limburg 2009, the idea of forming a band emerges, and the material develops from restrained piano pieces into pop songs with a harder edge.

Early band period

The lineup changes several times, along with the band name, before the project settles as a five-piece band called MADI. The music moves away from the original solo piano format and into a fuller pop sound.

Solo work

By 2020, Madi is working as a solo musician and explores electronic instrumentals and dark pop. The songs address mental illness, female empowerment and sexual liberation, and they also reflect experiences of bipolar disorder and BPD.

Style

Madi's work sits around pop and rock, with links to electropop and post-rock in the broader description of the project.
