Mad Tsai is a Taiwanese and Peruvian singer-songwriter from Florida and Los Angeles, professionally known as Jonathan Chai. Born in 2002, he makes pop and pop rap music and also works in an indie pop, queer and bedroom-pop context.

Early life and background

Mad Tsai is originally from Huntington Beach, California. He starts writing music at 13 and performs at local shows while using his songs to address mental health, bullying, self-love and identity. As a teenager, he is involved in marching band and choir, and he learns the ukulele in high school.

Career

He gains popularity on TikTok under the name madsteaparty. His profile increases further after he comes out to his mother with the song “boy bi” and shares her reaction on TikTok. He continues to make music and other content alongside his studies.

Mad Tsai is based in Los Angeles and studies at UCLA. He is part of the university’s acapella group Resonance and works toward two majors: music industry/history and English.
