Lyle Lovett

Lyle Lovett is an American singer-songwriter and actor from Houston, Texas, born in 1957. He works across country, alternative country, americana, blues, jazz, rockabilly and related styles, and is also associated with a band format under the name Lyle Lovett and His Large Band.

Music

Lovett is based in the alt-country and americana sphere, but his records draw on a wider set of American roots forms. His music typically includes elements of folk, swing, blues, jazz and gospel, alongside more traditional country and western arrangements. He is identified with a dry, reflective style that has led to him being described as “the thinking man’s cowboy”.

He spends twenty-six years on the Curb label and releases his eleventh and final album for the company, Release Me, as a collection centred mainly on covers he has performed but not previously recorded.

Career and recognition

Lovett wins four Grammy Awards. He also appears in a number of films and makes guest appearances on television.

Personal life

He is married to actress Julia Roberts for a short period in the mid-1990s. In 2002, he is gored by a bull while working on his uncle’s farm in Texas, then recovers and resumes touring.
