Luo

Luo is an electronic and experimental group based in Brighton and Bristol. It begins as the alias of Brighton musician and engineer Josh Trinnaman, and active since 2012 it develops into a live project built around his electronic production. The act works across downtempo, electronic rock, future bass, IDM and post-rock, with a sound that also draws on glitch and post-rock elements.

Formation and line-up

Originally a solo project, Luo expands into a full live group and is described as an experimental two-piece. Josh Trinnaman is the central member, with Sam Hughes featured for his live drumming on tracks such as “Octopus” and “Intertwined”. Trinnaman had already established a name as a solo performer before the project grows into a band format.

Style and recordings

Luo’s music combines percussive sounds, arpeggiated synthesisers, guitar drones, ambient passages, brass arrangements and chopped vocal samples. The arrangements are framed by Trinnaman’s focused electronic production, moving between atmospheric sections and heavier rhythmic passages. The project sits within electronic and experimental music, while also taking in downtempo, electronic rock, future bass, IDM and post-rock.

Live work and recognition

Before the group format, Trinnaman supports acts including Death Grips and Venetian Snares. Luo also receives critical attention from Huw Stephens on Radio 1, Clash Magazine and Notion.
