Lunice is a producer and DJ from Montréal, Canada. Born in 1988, he works in electronic and hip hop-influenced music, including trap, glitch hop, aquacrunk and hyphy.

Background

Lunice Fermin Pierre II is a child of Filipino and Haitian immigrants. He begins as a b-boy and competes with the 701 Squad. In the early 2000s, he starts making his own music after hearing how 9th Wonder builds beats using Fruity Loops.

Career

His first gig takes place in 2007 at Hovatron's monthly Bass Culture in Montréal, where he meets Sixtoo and is invited to play the Megasoid parties. He becomes part of the Turbo Crunk crew and later releases a video for Lazersword's "Gucci Sweatshirt" in 2008.

In 2010, Lunice takes part in the London edition of the Red Bull Music Academy, performs at the Sonar Music Festival, and works with Safewalls and Cirque du Soleil on a single and mixtape. He signs to LuckyMe for two EPs, Stacker Upper and One Hunned, released in 2010 and 2011.

He also connects with Diplo and Mad Decent through a remix of Deerhunter's "Helicopter", which leads to further remixes, mixes for BBC Radio 1 and performances at the Mad Decent Block Party. In 2011, he collaborates with Azealia Banks and appears in her video for "212".

TNGHT and collaborations

Lunice and Hudson Mohawke form TNGHT after meeting in 2008, when Lunice books Mohawke for a Turbo Crunk party. The duo releases an EP on Warp Records and LuckyMe in 2012, following a headline set at Warp's SXSW showcase earlier that year.

Across this period, Lunice also works with labels including XL Recordings, Warner Bros. Records, Palms Out Sounds, Young Turks, Big Dada and Top Billin'. He tours internationally throughout 2010 and 2011 and is described as a major influence on the 2010s club and wave-and-trap scenes.
