Lump

Lump is the name used by more than one act, including a collaboration between Laura Marling and Mike Lindsay, a US rock and funk group, an Australian hard rock band, and a solo artist from Portugal who is identified as minimal techno artist Arttu Snellman.

One version of Lump is the project formed by English folk artist Laura Marling and Mike Lindsay, known for his work with Tunng and Throws. The pair meet at a Neil Young concert, where Marling appears as the support act, and they begin working together after Lindsay decides he needs a vocalist for music he is making outside his bands. They are mutual admirers of each other’s work.

The project’s debut album is self-titled and appears in 2018, preceded by the single “Curse of the Contemporary”. Marling’s lyrics draw on the poetry of Edward Lear and Ivor Cutler, as well as Surrealist ideas. The music combines Marling’s modern folk style with Lindsay’s folktronica background in Tunng. After the first album, both return to their own work: Marling releases Song for Our Daughter and Lindsay produces albums for Dana Gavanski and Douglas Dare, while also releasing Tunng’s Dead Club. The duo later reconvene at Lindsay’s studios in Margate, England, and release Animal in 2021.

Other uses of the name

Another Lump is a band that describes its music as a mixture of rock, funk and other styles. It consists of Leo Thevenot on guitar and vocals, A.P. Gonzalez on drums, Michael Joseph on bass, trumpet, toy plane, trombone and vocals, and Ben Ellman on tenor and baritone saxophone and vocals. A separate Lump is an Australian hard rock band, and another is a Finnish project associated with dub-based electronic music, using live mixing and low-tech, organic methods to shape densely textured tracks.
