Luke Solomon

Luke Solomon is a UK house and techno producer and DJ. He begins his professional DJ career in 1990, after building experience through a Friday-night residency at Middlesex University student union. During this period, he also works in a Barnet record shop selling house and soul, while holding a part-time job as a fishmonger.

Early industry work and labels

He later works at Freetown, where he is alongside artists including Robert Owens, Felix da Housecat, Jamie Principle and Masters at Work. That role leads to a long-running connection with Rob Mello and Kenny Hawkes, and to his early recording work and involvement with live radio. He then sets up Classic Recordings with Derrick Carter. Over a nine-year period, the label introduces releases by DJ Sneak, Tiefschwarz, Isolée and Freeform Five, before distribution problems bring that chapter to an end.

Freaks and Music For Freaks

Solomon starts the production team Freaks with Justin Harris in 1996. Working under the Freaks name, the pair release singles and albums on their own Music For Freaks label. Their albums include The Beat Diaries, Meanwhile Back At The Disco and The Man Who Lived Underground. Tracks associated with the project include “Turning Orange”, “Where Were You When The Lights Went Out” and “The Creeps”. Freaks also remix artists such as Alison Limerick, Pulp, Damon Albarn, Kasabian, The Streets and Duran Duran.

Solo releases and other work

As a solo artist, Solomon releases music on a range of labels, including Crosstown Rebels. His first artist album, The Difference Engine, comes out on Rekids. He also records a mix CD for D-Edge and launches the Little Creatures imprint, which begins with his reworks of tracks by KINK and Neville Watson, Kris Wadsworth and Crooked Man.

Later activity

Solomon steps back from record label work to concentrate on production. Freaks later signs the album Psych to Ladomat and tours showcases with a five-piece band.
