Lucky Elephant is a group that makes melodic, experimental music with elements of dub, jazz, indie, indie folk and folk. The band presents a mix of warmth and complexity, combining harmony-led songs with darker, more reflective passages.

Band line-up and instruments

The group is made up of four musicians: Laurence Clack on drums; Sam Johnson and Paul Burnley handling keyboards, effects and other instruments; and Emmanuel “Manu” Labescat on vocals and multi-instrument duties. The band uses old synths, tape delays, Wurlitzers, harmoniums, drums, ukuleles and guitars as part of its sound.

Clack is described as the rhythmic core of the group, with a style that makes the drums carry melodic weight. Johnson and Burnley shape the broader arrangement, with one working around harmonium and Space Echo effects and the other turning samples into lead lines. Labescat adds vocals, harmonium, guitar and piano, and brings lyrics that are intended to reward close listening.

Lucky Elephant’s music balances light and dark elements. The group aims for tunes that are familiar and melodic, while also moving into melancholic and reflective territory. Its sound is built around interplay between rhythm, harmony and texture, with a strong emphasis on contrast.
