Lucky Daye

Lucky Daye is the performing name of David Debrandon Brown, a singer and songwriter from New Orleans, United States. Born in 1985, he works in alternative R&B and is based in Los Angeles. His music draws on classic soul as well as traditional and progressive R&B, placing him slightly outside straightforward retro or commercial styles.

Early life and background

Brown grows up in a cult that forbids secular music, but he still develops an early ability to sing. After his mother leaves the cult, he begins listening closely to classic R&B and becomes especially influenced by Stevie Wonder and Rick James. He later moves from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, first to Tyler, Texas, and then to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue music.

Songwriting career

Before releasing music as a solo artist, Brown builds a career as a songwriter and background vocalist. He writes for Keith Sweat, including several tracks on Just Me, and also contributes to Ne-Yo, including “She Got Her Own.” Other songwriting credits include Boyz II Men’s “Believe Us,” Keke Palmer’s “Enemiez,” Ella Mai’s “10,000 Hours” and “Down,” Trey Songz’s “Song Goes Off,” and multiple songs for Mary J. Blige, including two tracks on Strength of a Woman.

Recording artist

He signs as a recording artist to the RCA-supported Keep Cool label and begins recording under the name Lucky Daye in 2018. His first release under that name is “Little More Time,” a collaboration with Victoria Monét that appears on the soundtrack for the third season of Insecure. He follows it with “Roll Some Mo” and then the six-track EP I, his major-label debut. The EP is written and produced with D’Mile and attracts comparisons to artists such as Frank Ocean, BJ the Chicago Kid, and Daniel Caesar.
