Lucius

Lucius is a US indie pop band from Brooklyn, New York. The group is active from 2005 and is made up of Jess Wolfe, Holly Laessig, Dan Molad, Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri. Its listed label is Wildewoman Music, and its sound is associated with indie pop, indie rock, pop, dance-pop and hip house.

Formation and line-up

The band forms around the vocal partnership of Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, who sing in unison and also play synth and keys respectively. Dan Molad plays drums and vocals, Peter Lalish plays guitar and vocals, and Andrew Burri plays guitar, drums and vocals. Wolfe and Laessig meet while studying at Berklee School of Music in Boston, then move into a Victorian house in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, where the group takes shape alongside future bandmates.

Recordings

Lucius records its self-titled debut EP in the Ditmas Park house where the band forms. The group’s early work develops from the close vocal arrangement between Wolfe and Laessig, with songs written and performed from the same perspective and with the same sentiment. The band’s debut full-length album is scheduled for release in autumn 2013.

Style and reception

The group is noted for its tightly blended lead vocals and harmony singing. Its songs are described as having a luminous, lilting quality, and the two front singers are characterised as an especially striking pair within the band’s sound.
