Low:r is the drum and bass project of Ben Downton, a producer and DJ from the United Kingdom. He grows up in a musical family and, from an early age, experiments with a range of instruments and styles, including violin and bass guitar. Before focusing on drum and bass, he plays in a few bands and develops an interest in music production through Cakewalk SONAR, which he receives in 2004.
Early work
Under the alias Morah, Downton releases and performs dubstep across the UK and Belgium by 2010. He later moves towards drum and bass, which he begins producing with fellow producer Locustlang. Their four-track techy EP Sentinel reaches the top ten in Drum & Bass Arena’s charts and receives support from Phil Tangent.
Low:r
Downton adopts the Low:r name in 2016. Since then, he releases material on Fokuz, Spearhead, Soulvent, Soul Deep and Terra Firma. His tracks are played by DJs around the world, and he DJs alongside artists including Spectrasoul, Pola & Bryson and Halogenix.
Style and recognition
Low:r works within drum and bass and draws inspiration from producers such as Camo & Krooked. His production is also shaped by everyday life. DJMag gives his track “Locked Away” a 7.5 rating and mentions him alongside names including Hybrid Minds and Delta Heavy.
