Low Roar

Low Roar is an Iceland-based project led by Ryan Karazija. The act originates in Iceland and is associated with electronic, folktronica, indietronica and post-rock, alongside indie, ambient, folk and alternative influences. Karazija, also known as Ryan Joseph Karazija, is from San Francisco, California and was formerly part of Audrye Sessions, with Black Seal also mentioned as an earlier affiliation. Low Roar is signed to Tonequake Records.

Style and sound

Low Roar’s music combines ambient textures with minimalist and post-rock elements, as well as folk-styled writing. Its songs use loops and layered instrumentation, with arrangements that include guitar, harp, pump organ, percussion and keys. The project’s material also uses haunting strings, yearning choruses and simple classical-style writing, with some songs described through a comparison to late-1990s Radiohead.

Releases and live performance

The project’s self-titled release appears on Tonequake Records, and its sound is described as moving between emotional, stark arrangements and more optimistic melodies. For live performances, Júlíus Óttar Björgvinsson and Katie Buckley join the set, expanding the instrumentation and layering of the performance.

Later activity

Karazija dies in 2022 due to complications from pneumonia. Before that, he is said to have been working on a Low Roar record titled house in the woods.
