Los Pirañas
Los Pirañas are a group from Bogotá, Colombia, active from 2010 to the present. The project brings together Pedro Ojeda with Eblis Alvarez and Mario Galeano, and it develops from their long exposure to Latin American tropical music, with roots in sounds that have often sat outside mainstream taste.
Style and influences
The group works with cumbia in several forms, including cumbia colombiana and cumbia peruana, alongside experimental rock, psychedelic rock and tropicanibalismo. Their music also draws on vallenato, Peruvian chicha, raspa, champeta, African sounds and related cumbia styles such as rebajada, villera and sabanera. The result is presented through humour, noise, a lack of solemnity and strong rhythmic drive.
Associated projects
Los Pirañas are connected to a wider Colombian experimental and tropical music scene. The members are also linked to Frente Cumbiero, Meridian Brothers, Palanca and the Ensamble Polifónico Vallenato, which places the group within a network of projects exploring cumbia and related traditions in new forms.
Musical approach
The group is noted for combining champeta, afrobeat, rock and cumbia into a psychedelic sound. Their work sits within contemporary Colombian music as a noisy, rhythm-heavy interpretation of tropical Latin American styles.
