Lor

Lor is a Polish band from Krakow. It begins as a four-piece group while the members are still in middle school, and it quickly attracts attention in Poland after the release of its first single, Windmill. From the start, the band is noted for an unusually mature approach to songwriting and arrangement.

Style and influences

Lor’s music combines indie folk, alt-pop and neo-classical elements. Its sound draws on a wide range of influences, including Keaton Henson, Birdy and Agnes Obel. The group also cites other art forms, such as painting and poetry, as important sources of inspiration. Although the songs use the structure of pop, they also make use of classical instruments and arrangements.

Members and roles

The band features Julia Błachuta on violin and Julia Skiba on piano. Jagoda Kudlińska provides the lead vocal, with a distinctive, delicate tone. Paulina Sumera writes the lyrics and is the only member who does not play an instrument; during performances, she serves as a storyteller figure within the band’s presentation.

Releases

Lor’s debut album, Lowlight, arrives four years after its first single. The album is described through its strong, coherent writing and detailed sound. In 2020, the band releases the EP Sunlight, which shows a further development in the group’s arrangements and a lighter, more melodic approach.

Reception

From its earliest releases, Lor is regarded as one of the leading young bands in Poland, with critics responding strongly to its combination of thoughtful lyrics, careful composition and instrumental ability.
