Loefah

Loefah is Peter Livingston, a London-based dubstep producer and DJ from Croydon, UK. He is regarded as one of the early figures in the development of dubstep and is closely associated with DMZ, one of the genre’s foundational labels.

Early work and DMZ

He begins by collaborating with Digital Mystikz and appears on the DMZ nights in Brixton. Loefah is also part of Mary Anne Hobbs’ Dubstep Warz radio show, which helps bring dubstep to a wider audience. His work in this period is known for a dark, minimal sound built around heavy basslines and stark vocal samples.

Swamp 81 and later label work

In 2009 he founds Swamp 81. The label first releases dubstep records by artists including Kryptic Minds and Skream, then broadens into a wider range of bass music after Addison Groove’s “Footcrab”. Swamp 81 also has a regular show on Rinse FM.

Style and associations

Loefah’s music sits within dubstep, with links to grime, electronic music, bass music and dub. His releases on DMZ remain among the key parts of his catalogue.
