Lindigo
Lindigo is a maloya group from Réunion, active since 1999, with Olivier Araste as a listed member. The group forms part of a newer generation on the island’s music scene and builds its work around performance as much as repertoire.
Its music combines the instrumental tradition of maloya with Madagascarian polyphonies. The group also brings in rhythmic elements associated with trance, along with contrasting lyrical arrangements, strong physical involvement and a prominent lead presence. This approach gives its performances a demanding and forceful character.
The group has already given more than 150 concerts, and its live work is described as a key part of its identity. Lindigo is associated with percussion, flute and folk influences as well as maloya, and remains rooted in Réunion’s musical traditions while pushing them into a more expansive stage format.
