Lighthouse Family

Lighthouse Family is a British pop-soul duo from Newcastle upon Tyne, made up of Tunde Baiyewu and Paul Tucker. The group forms in 1993, after the two meet at college and while both are working in bars. Baiyewu is a vocalist, and Tucker is a keyboard player; both are born in London in 1968.

Formation and early development

The duo begins by recording demos of songs Tucker has written in the late 1980s. A demo of “Ocean Drive” attracts the attention of Polydor Records A&R director Colin Barlow, who signs the act to a six-month development deal in 1993. The group then works with songwriters Martin Brammer, Tim Kellett and Tim Laws on further demos. They later sign to record a full album, with additional songs contributed by Shaun Ward, Junior Giscombe and Alan Glass.

Albums and commercial breakthrough

Lighthouse Family’s debut album, Ocean Drive, is completed in 1994 and becomes the foundation of the duo’s breakthrough. It sells more than 1.6 million copies in the UK and helps establish the act across Europe as an easy-listening pop duo. The album is produced by Mike Peden. Its lead single, “Lifted”, receives radio play but does not become a major seller until a 1996 re-release, when it reaches the UK top five. By the end of 1997, Ocean Drive is certified six-times platinum.

The follow-up album, Postcards from Heaven, achieves similar sales levels in 1998. The duo’s management says the act is not split, even during periods of inactivity, and leaves open the possibility of another album.

Activity, hiatuses and later work

The group goes on hiatus in early 2003, after a heavy promotional schedule and the international success of “Whatever Gets You Through The Day”. After that, Baiyewu pursues a solo career and releases the album Tunde in 2004, while Tucker joins the rock band The Orange Lights.

Lighthouse Family reforms in 2010 and 2011, including a full UK and Ireland tour in February and March 2011. The duo returns again from 2019 and releases Blue Sky in Your Head, its first studio album in 18 years. The act splits in 2022.

Management and labels

Throughout its career, Lighthouse Family is managed by Keith Armstrong and Phil Mitchell, who are the co-founders of Newcastle-based Kitchenware Records. Kitchenware has gone on hiatus in the 1990s in order to handle the management of Lighthouse Family and other musicians. At the start of the band’s first album campaign, Polydor’s investment in the act totals about £250,000, and the hiring of Mike Peden is described as a major expense.
