Liam Gallagher

Liam Gallagher is an English singer and songwriter from Manchester, best known as the lead vocalist of Oasis. He is associated with britpop, rock, alternative rock and indie rock, and is noted for a distinctive singing style and an outspoken public image.

Career

He joins the band first known as the Rain, which later takes the name Oasis. The group forms in 1991, with Liam Gallagher as lead vocalist and his older brother Noel Gallagher later joining as lead guitarist after first being approached to manage the band.

Oasis releases its debut album, Definitely Maybe, in 1994 to critical and commercial success during the rise of Britpop. The follow-up, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, arrives in 1995 and achieves major international chart success. The band's third album, Be Here Now, follows in 1997 and becomes the fastest-selling album in UK chart history. Although Britpop declines in popularity towards the end of the 1990s, Oasis continues to release commercially successful albums, all of which top the UK Albums Chart. The group performs to large audiences worldwide, especially in Europe and South America.

Beady Eye and solo work

After Noel Gallagher leaves Oasis, Liam Gallagher forms Beady Eye with the remaining members in 2009. He fronts the band from 2010 until it ends in 2014, and the group issues two studio albums.

He begins a solo career in 2017 with As You Were, which reaches number one on the UK Albums Chart and becomes a major commercial success. His second solo album, Why Me? Why Not, also reaches number one and becomes the fastest-selling vinyl record of its year. It is his tenth number one album when his Oasis releases are included. His third solo album, C'mon You Know, also debuts at number one in the UK.

In 2024, he collaborates with former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire on the album Liam Gallagher & John Squire.

Recognition

Gallagher is widely recognised as one of the most notable figures in British rock music. In 2010, he is voted the greatest frontman of all time in a Q magazine reader poll. In 2019, he receives the MTV Europe Music Award for Rock Icon.

Public profile

His career is closely associated with public disputes with Noel Gallagher and frequent media attention around their behaviour. Oasis's rivalry with Blur also attracts considerable coverage during the 1990s.
