Lenny Kravitz is an American singer, musician, songwriter, record producer and actor from Manhattan, United States. Born in 1964, he works across alternative rock, funk, funk rock, hard rock, pop and pop rock, with a style that also draws on reggae, soul and R&B.

Career

Kravitz releases his debut album, Let Love Rule, in 1989. It sets out the sound that runs through much of his later work, combining rock and funk with other Black American musical styles. His commercial breakthrough comes through a series of singles in the 1990s and 2000s.

Among his best-known songs are “Let Love Rule”, “It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over”, “Always on the Run”, “Are You Gonna Go My Way”, “Fly Away” and “American Woman”. “It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over” and “Again” both reach the top ten of the US Billboard Hot 100, while several of his other major singles reach the top ten of the Alternative Airplay chart.

Awards and recognition

Kravitz wins the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance four years in a row from 1999 to 2002. That run gives him records for the most wins and the most consecutive wins in that category by a male artist. He also sells more than 40 million albums worldwide and appears at number 93 on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

Outside music, Kravitz acts in films including Precious and the first two films in The Hunger Games series. He also founds Kravitz Design Inc. He has been married to Lisa Bonet, and they have one daughter, Zoë Kravitz.
