Lemuria

Lemuria is a Buffalo, New York group active from 2004 and best known as an indie rock and pop-punk act. The band’s line-up includes Sheena Ozzella, Alex Kerns and Jason Draper, with Adam Vernick originally on bass before leaving shortly after the first demo. Other listed members are Alexander Kerns, Kyle Patton and Max Gregor.

Background and style

The Buffalo band forms in 2004 and works within pop punk and power pop, with indie and punk also associated with its sound. Its influences include Jawbreaker, Superchunk, The Wipers and The Lemonheads. Ozzella previously sings in Team Chocolate and Splag, while Kerns also starts a solo side project. Draper also plays in The Failure’s Union.

Releases

Lemuria issues a self-released demo, a 7-inch EP, three split releases with Frame, Kind Of Like Spitting and The Ergs!, and a 7-inch single, all through the Buffalo label Art of the Underground. The band also appears on the Crafty Records compilation NY vs NJ. Its later releases include the first full-length album Get Better on Asian Man Records and The First Collection, a compilation of early and out-of-print material released on YoYo Records and later reissued by Asian Man Records.

Other artists using the name

Three other acts also use the name Lemuria: a symphonic metal band from Belgium, a soul, jazz and funk group put together by producer Kirk Thompson, and a black metal-influenced folk metal band from Antwerp that forms in 2001, issues The Vault of the Witness in 2002 and Tales, Ale and Fire in 2004, breaks up in 2006, returns in 2008 and later releases the concept album Chanson the la Croisade.
