Laurel Halo is an electronic musician and DJ from Ann Arbor, United States, based in Los Angeles, California. Her work spans ambient, ambient pop, art pop, avant-garde pop, electronic, and experimental music, and her output is often described in terms of jazz, dub, ambient, pop, and techno influences.
Career
Halo releases music on Awe, the label she launches in 2021, and has also issued recordings through Hyperdub, Honest Jon’s, and Portraits GRM. Her debut album, Quarantine, is named Album of the Year 2012 by The Wire. Her catalogue also includes the studio album Atlas (2023) and MK Velsorf & Aase Nielsen’s Opening Night (2025).
DJ work and collaborations
Alongside her studio releases and live performances, Halo also works as a DJ. She releases a DJ-Kicks mix in 2019. She has collaborated with Julia Holter, Oliver Coates, and Klein.
Other work
Halo composes original scores for the films Possessed and Midnight Zone. She also creates a collaborative piece with the Japanese virtual pop star Hatsune Miku, commissioned by CTM and Transmediale. She launches a monthly NTS Radio show under the same name as her label, Awe. In 2023, she joins the faculty of Composition and Experimental Sound Practices at the California Institute of the Arts.
