Laura Moody
Laura Moody is a British cellist, composer, singer and songwriter based in London. Her work centres on cello and voice, and she also appears as an occasional theatre performer.
Elysian Quartet and ensemble work
Moody is best known for her work with the Elysian Quartet, a string quartet associated with contemporary classical, experimental and improvised music. The group is noted for pioneering performances and recordings in those styles. She also tours internationally as a member of The Gogmagogs, a physical theatre string ensemble.
Solo music
Her solo work uses cello and voice together in highly physical, theatrical ways. She describes the songs she writes as pop songs, but frames them through influences from beatboxing, electronica, contemporary music, classical music and a range of pop styles. In practice, her solo material focuses on what she can do with acoustic cello and voice alone rather than with additional technology or writing for other performers.
